Getting around: the difference that decides your trip
Copenhagen is built for bikes, and renting one on the first morning changes the whole visit. The flat terrain and separated lanes mean a tourist can genuinely ride like a local by lunchtime. Nyhavn to Christiania to the Meatpacking District is a comfortable loop, and you never wait for a bus. It is one of the reasons the city keeps turning up on lists of Europe’s most walkable cities.
Stockholm does not work that way. Gamla Stan, Djurgården, Södermalm and Norrmalm are separate islands with real distance between them, and the hills on Södermalm are steeper than photos suggest. The practical consequence: in Copenhagen you can improvise. In Stockholm, cluster your days by island or you will spend the trip in transit.

Both are expensive by European standards and neither is dramatically cheaper than the other. Sweden often comes out slightly ahead on food and drink, especially outside the center, while Denmark tends to be a bit steeper on eating out. Accommodation is close enough that the specific hotel matters more than the city.
Where the gap opens is in habits rather than prices. Copenhagen tempts you into restaurants because the food scene is the reason people come. Even if you never book a high-end restaurant, you eat better here by accident. Smørrebrød at lunch is the thing to try, and Torvehallerne is the easiest introduction.

In Copenhagen, the choice matters less than usual, because the city is small enough that most central neighborhoods put you within a short ride of everything. Indre By is the obvious base and the most expensive. Vesterbro, just behind the main station, is the better value and has more life in the evening. Nørrebro is cheaper again, more residential, and a short cycle from the center.
In Stockholm, the choice matters a great deal, because moving between islands takes real time. Norrmalm is the practical base with the best transport links and the easiest airport connection. Södermalm is the one most people enjoy staying in, with the bars, the secondhand shops and the views back over the water, though the hills are a factor if you are carrying luggage. Gamla Stan looks tempting on a map and is worth walking through daily, but it is crowded, noisy at night and short on ordinary amenities.
One rule holds in both: check what your rate includes before comparing prices. Breakfast is often bundled in Nordic hotels and it is substantial enough to replace lunch, which quietly changes the real cost of a room.
When to go
Summer favors Stockholm heavily. The archipelago only makes sense from roughly June to August, the ferries run properly, and the long evenings suit a city built around water. Copenhagen in summer is lovely too, but its charms are less season-dependent.
In the shoulder months, and especially in winter, Copenhagen is the safer pick. Everything is close together, so weather matters less when the walk between two places is ten minutes rather than a metro ride and a bridge. December is Copenhagen’s strongest winter argument, with Tivoli decorated and the city at its most comfortable.
Stockholm in deep winter is atmospheric but demanding. Daylight is short, and the archipelago, which is half the reason to come, is effectively closed.
