Seven days is the trip most people can actually take. You’ve got a week off, a flight into Europe, and a vague sense of wanting to see more than one place. The problem is that a 7 day Europe itinerary can go two ways: a smooth loop where each city flows into the next, or a scramble of missed trains and half-days lost to travel. The difference is almost always the route you pick before you leave.
So here are five ready-made routes you can copy outright. Each one is built for a single week, keeps travel time sane, and mixes the big-hitter cities with somewhere quieter so you’re not stuck in queues the whole time. Pick the one that matches the version of Europe you’re after.
Before you pick a route
Two rules save more trips than any other. First, don’t sleep in more than three or four cities in a week. Packing and unpacking eats a morning every time, and a week has only seven of them. Second, book the intercity legs before you fly, not on the day. Route 1: The Classic Capitals — Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam
This is the first-timer’s week, and there’s no shame in it. The three cities sit close together, linked by fast trains that turn the gaps into ninety-minute rides.
Give Paris three nights. That’s enough for the Louvre, a morning in Montmartre, and an evening walk along the Seine without sprinting. Take the mid-morning train to Brussels, spend a night and a day on the Grand-Place and a plate of moules-frites, then push on to Amsterdam for the last two nights. Rent a bike, ride the canals, and leave from Schiphol, which is one of the easiest airports in Europe to fly out of. Total train time across the week is under five hours.
Route 2: The Iberian Week — Barcelona, Valencia, Madrid
Spain rewards a slower week, and this route keeps you in one country so you never fight a language switch or a currency change. Barcelona first, three nights, for Gaudí and the beach and the Gothic Quarter. The high-speed AVE train then drops you in Valencia in well under two hours for a night of paella where the dish was actually invented.
Finish in Madrid, two nights, for the Prado and the tapas crawl through La Latina on a Sunday. Spanish trains are fast and comfortable, and internal flights are cheap if you’d rather skip a leg. This route works best in spring or autumn, when the south isn’t yet an oven.
Route 3: Central Europe’s Greatest Hits — Prague, Vienna, Budapest
Three imperial cities on one river-and-rail corridor, and probably the best value week on this list. Prague earns three nights for the castle, the old town clock, and the beer that costs less than water. The train to Vienna takes about four hours through decent scenery.
Vienna gets two nights of coffee houses and the Schönbrunn gardens, which are free to walk even if you skip the palace tour. Then a short hop to Budapest for the final two nights and a long soak in the thermal baths. Route 4: The Italian Loop — Rome, Florence, Venice
Italy in a week is greedy, but this trio is the one route where greedy works, because the train line runs straight up the spine of the country. Start in Rome with three nights for the Colosseum, the Vatican, and at least one evening of doing nothing but eating. The fast train to Florence takes ninety minutes.
Florence gets two nights for the Uffizi and a day trip into the Tuscan hills if you have the legs for it. End in Venice for two nights, and here’s the honest advice: get up early and see the canals before the day-trippers arrive, because by noon it’s shoulder to shoulder. Book your museum slots in advance for all three cities or you’ll lose hours to lines.
Route 5: The Nordic Week — Copenhagen, Malmö, Stockholm
The pricey option, but a beautiful one, and the easiest of the five to plan because the trains are punctual to the minute. Copenhagen first, three nights, for Nyhavn, the food markets, and a bike ride like a local. A twenty-minute train over the Øresund bridge puts you in Malmö, Sweden, for a day trip or an overnight if you want to slow down.
Then the train north to Stockholm, two nights, spread across fourteen islands that you’ll cross by bridge and ferry. The Nordic countries cost more than anywhere else here, so this is the route to save the food budget for rather than the transport. When to go and what it costs
Timing changes these routes more than the cities do. Late spring and early autumn give you open museums, working ferries, and rooms that haven’t hit peak rates yet. July and August bring the crowds and the highest prices, especially on the Italian and Iberian loops, where the heat alone is a reason to wait for September. Winter empties the streets and drops the room rates, though the Nordic week turns short and dark.
As a rough guide, budget more per day for Routes 1, 4, and 5, where Paris, Venice, and Stockholm push the average up. Central Europe and Spain sit lower, which is why Route 3 keeps showing up on cheaper-week lists.
