Have you ever pondered over how you can avoid jetlag? If you’ve flown long distances before, you have probably at some point experienced jetlag. The feeling of being tired and fatigued and generally drained from energy. You can read more about what jetlag is here!Â
- This is our take on how to avoid jetlag or minimise it as much as possible!
1 Sleep Smart
Sleeping smart can be a key part to help avoid jetlag! If you’re planning to sleep on the flight, make sure to time it so that you start adjusting your patterns already on the flight.Â
- A good tip is to aim for flights that arrive early in the morning, that way, you can sleep a lot on the flight and be ready for the day when you arrive!
2 Stay Hydrated
The most essential factor of reducing jetlag is staying hydrated. Make sure to drink a lot of water both before, during and after your flight! It is very normal to become dehydrated and fatigued during long distance flights, so make sure to have water nearby!Â
- Although the inflight alcoholic beverages may be tempting – these will only dehydrate you further and increase your jetlag!
3 Planned Adjustment
When planning out your itinerary make sure to take into consideration that you may be bit tired on the first day. You should find a balance of activities that keeps you occupied but isn’t too tiring.
- It can be tempting to take a nap once you make it to your hotel, but try to stay awake as long as possible the first evening so that you adjust to the new time!
4 Add a Stopover
If you have the time and money for it, you should definitely consider an overnight stopover on the way.Â
- This not only gives you time to relax and readjust but also enables you to see a whole extra destination!
Take a look at some of our favourite stopovers in Asia, North America or Europe.Â
5 Fly West
This tip is, for obvious reasons, not always possible – depending on the desired destination. It can be worth keeping in mind, as it also helps your planning of the first couple of days.
- Apparently, our internal clocks have an easier time adjusting to the time difference when the days are getting longer, than when they are getting shorter. So to minimise or avoid jetlag – fly west!
