Berlin
Berlin has a lot to offer. More museums than rainy days per year, one of the best public transport systems in the world, a vibrant culture, it’s a city brimming with life and energy.Â
Population:Â approx. 3.750.000
Size: 891.8 km²
The culture
A big part of Berlin is history-based, as it played a significant role back in WW2. A lot of the notable attractions are somewhat related to what happened back then.
The architecture in Berlin is a mixture of new and old. This is not only for the architecture. The city has a unique vibe, depending on what area you happen to find yourself in.
In terms of nightclubs and bars, it’s not as straight forward as in other cities. In berlin, getting in can be quite the hurdle to your night out, as some of the clubs are very strict in terms of letting people into their club.
A thing that really enlightens the city is the number of young people. If you’re going to a park, a cafe, etc., you’ll most likely run into a lot of young people. One reason is that there are a lot of students from both Germany and other countries studying in Berlin.
Transportation in Berlin
Berlin is a fairly large city, and with that follows a lot of public transport. It is considered by many sources to have one of the best public transportation in the world. Every day, approximately 1.5 million uses the public transport system in Berlin. Berlins subway systems have a combined length of 473 kilometers and tram lines covering 120 kilometers.
Within Berlin’s city limits, there are 180 kilometers of navigable waterways, which makes it an excellent opportunity for tourists to sightsee. Of course, you don’t get the full experience of the attractions, although on most of the boat tours in “Spree” you get a guided tour of the most significant things that you come by on tour.
Remember to check the Brandenburg Gate and the Fernsehturm out – it also has a good view over Berlin.Â
Shopping in Berlin
Going shopping? Then you certainly have to experience Kurfürstendamm, one of the most famous avenues in Berlin. A 3.5-kilometer long shopping avenue with a lot of life and a great environment.Â
It is located in the neighborhood Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf and goes from the square Breitscheidplatz with Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche, also known as the powder can, to Rathenauplatz in Grunewald.
World War II
A big part of Berlin has something to do with history. Everywhere you go, there is some sort of attraction back from WW2. From the Berlin Wall Memorial to bunkers, yes, bunkers. You can book a tour inside some of the biggest bunkers in Berlin. If you’re interested in WW2, this is definitely worth trying, but have in mind that it can feel quite claustrophobic inside of them.
Checkpoint Charlie is always crowded, but there’s a great vibe in that area. There are also a museum and some other things to do in the area of Checkpoint Charlie, definitely worth the visit.
